Sourcing lighting in China

Zhongshan's Guzhen town is the undisputed lighting capital of China โ€” a single town with thousands of factories producing everything from $3 LED bulbs to architectural lighting systems, plus the entire component ecosystem: drivers, LED chips, housings, diffusers, and dimmers. Nowhere else on earth can you develop a custom lamp as fast or as economically. The cluster serves everyone from Amazon sellers to global lighting brands, and the engineering depth for LED technology specifically is unmatched.

Lighting is electrical, which means safety certification is the whole game. The EU requires CE-LVD (safety) plus EMC; the US expects UL or ETL listing, and many retailers won't stock unlisted products. The technical failure modes are specific: cheap LED drivers that flicker or fail early, overstated lumen output (the '100W equivalent' that isn't), poor heat dissipation that kills LEDs in months, and IP ratings for outdoor products that don't survive actual rain. A lighting product that fails electrically isn't a return โ€” it's a fire risk.

CN Ally sources lighting from factories with real electrical engineering capability and verifiable certification history. We check driver specifications against claims, verify lumen output and color temperature with integrating-sphere data where it matters, confirm heat-sink design adequacy, and coordinate UL/ETL/CE testing with accredited labs. Our QC includes burn-in testing, electrical safety checks, and for outdoor products, IP water-ingress verification. We also sanity-check the photometrics: if the numbers look too good for the price, we find out why before you order.

MOQ guidance

Minimum order quantities, realistically

Factory MOQs are starting positions, not laws of nature. Here's what to expect in this category โ€” and how we work around it.

1

Standard LED products (bulbs, downlights) typically start at 500โ€“1,000 units per model โ€” driver and LED chip purchasing drives the minimum.

2

Decorative lamps with custom designs usually run 200โ€“500 units, with shade and housing tooling amortized across the run.

3

Fully custom lighting designs (new molds, custom drivers) start around 1,000 units and need 60โ€“90 days including certification.

4

Certification costs (UL/ETL listing) are per model family โ€” we help you plan model ranges that share certifications to control costs.

QC focus points

What we inspect for this category

Generic inspections miss category-specific failures. Our QC protocol for this category targets the defects that actually occur.

Electrical safety testing

Hi-pot, grounding continuity, and insulation checks on sampled units. Electrical safety is zero-tolerance โ€” a failed unit stops the shipment, not just the batch.

Driver & component verification

The LED driver is opened and checked against the approved specification. Driver substitution is the most common silent downgrade in lighting โ€” and the main cause of early failure.

Photometric sanity checks

Lumen output, color temperature (CCT), and CRI verified against claims. Overstated brightness is endemic in budget lighting; we check the numbers.

Burn-in testing

Extended power-on testing on a sub-sample to catch early-life driver and LED failures before they reach customers.

IP rating verification (outdoor)

Gaskets, seals, and enclosures inspected, with water-ingress testing for IP-rated outdoor products. An IP65 claim gets verified, not assumed.

FAQs

Common questions about sourcing lighting

Legally, OSHA requires NRTL-listed products in workplaces, and most US retailers and marketplaces effectively require UL or ETL listing for lighting. Unlisted lighting faces listing takedowns and liability exposure. We coordinate UL/ETL certification with accredited labs โ€” budget $3,000โ€“$8,000 per model family and 6โ€“10 weeks, planned before production.
Almost always the driver or thermal design. Underspecified drivers, inadequate heat sinking, and overdriven LED chips produce impressive initial brightness and short lives. We verify driver specs, check heat-sink adequacy, and run burn-in testing โ€” the difference between a 1-year product and a 5-year product is usually $1โ€“$2 in components.
Yes โ€” Guzhen factories increasingly offer Tuya/Smart Life-compatible modules, which is the fastest path to app-controlled lighting without custom firmware development. For custom smart features we coordinate with electronics engineering teams. Wireless products also need FCC (US) and CE-RED (EU) radio certifications, which we include in the compliance plan.
We compare the factory's photometric data against the LED chip and driver specifications โ€” the math has to work. For critical products we coordinate integrating-sphere testing at accredited labs. If a $8 '100W equivalent' bulb seems too good to be true, the test report will tell us why.
Outdoor products add IP water-ingress requirements and UV-resistant materials; solar adds panel and battery sizing verification. Our QC includes seal inspection and water testing for IP-rated products, and we verify solar charging performance claims rather than trusting the spec sheet.
