1688 vs Alibaba: Which Platform Should You Actually Source From?

CN Ally Team·April 8, 2026

Same parent company, 15–30% price difference. When to use Alibaba's buyer protection, when to switch to 1688 pricing, and how to get the best of both.

Alibaba and 1688 are both owned by Alibaba Group, but they serve different buyers — and choosing the wrong one can cost you 15–30% on unit price. Here is how we explain the difference to clients.

Alibaba: built for international buyers

Alibaba.com is the export-facing platform. Suppliers there speak English, understand export documentation, and are set up for international shipping and Trade Assurance. The tradeoff: prices include the cost of serving foreign buyers — English-speaking sales staff, export compliance, platform fees — and many listings come from trading companies rather than factories.

  • English-language interface and supplier communication.
  • Trade Assurance order protection on eligible orders.
  • Suppliers experienced with export paperwork and Incoterms.
  • Higher prices, and harder to tell factories from trading companies.

1688: the domestic wholesale market

1688.com is Alibaba's domestic platform, where Chinese businesses buy from each other. Prices are typically 15–30% lower than Alibaba for the same product because you are buying closer to the factory, often from the manufacturer directly. The catch: the entire platform is in Chinese, most suppliers do not export, and you need a domestic purchasing agent to buy, consolidate, inspect, and ship internationally.

  • Significantly lower prices and direct access to factories.
  • Wider product selection, including items never listed on Alibaba.
  • Chinese-only platform; suppliers rarely speak English.
  • No export support — you need an agent for QC, consolidation, and freight.

So which should you use?

If you are placing your first orders, value order protection, and want to communicate directly in English, start with Alibaba. Once you have validated a product and are reordering in volume, moving the same product to 1688 through a sourcing agent is one of the easiest margin improvements available — we regularly see clients cut unit costs by 20% or more on identical goods.

How we bridge the gap

CN Ally purchases on 1688 on behalf of clients: we negotiate in Chinese, verify the supplier, run quality inspections before the balance is paid, consolidate goods from multiple suppliers into one shipment, and handle export customs and freight. You get 1688 pricing with Alibaba-level convenience.

A practical approach many of our clients use: source samples and first orders on Alibaba to validate quality, then shift repeat orders to 1688 once the product is proven. Best of both worlds.
